![]() The refrain 'it's a wide open road' repeats throughout the song, which adds to the feeling of loneliness and the sense of having nothing to hold onto. The protagonist expresses his longing for the woman and the pain of the realization that she is now with someone else. Despite the beauty and vastness of the landscape, it does not console his broken heart. He drove out hunting for her, and in the vast open sky, he yells his insides out. The protagonist then admits to losing kin and friends, cutting them off, as it were, like limbs. He remembers carrying the baby just for her, and then crying in the wilderness, as though the baby were a symbol of the woman he loves. Emotions are likened to sounds of a rolling drum and guns shooting in his chest. Throughout the lyrics, we can feel his pain and longing for her.
